Valentine
(2001)
Slasher
movies, jolt-worthy or terrible, have an uncanny way of
reflecting the teen-sex zeitgeist. The first-generation
model, epitomized by Halloween, was drenched in hormonal
guilt: The lascivious were punished, and it was the lone
virgin, drawing on her ''virtue,'' who had the strength
to survive. In Valentine, there isn't a young woman in
sight who's a virgin, but in this case the assorted vixen-victims,
led by Denise Richards and her spectacular wall of teeth,
treat any man who tries to date one of them with such
snooty, as-if! contempt that the movie becomes a violent
revenge fantasy against the underlying hostile dismissiveness
of girl power.
In
a replay of Prom Night, we're led to believe that the
mad killer, who wears a Cupid mask, is a former junior-high
geek seeking retribution for the night he was humiliated
at a school dance. But he could just as well be any of
the grown-up lotharios on screen, including Adam Carr
played by heartthrob David Boreanaz (of TV's Angel). They're
either too sleazy or too nice -- damned whichever way
-- and so the movie, which doesn't contain a single scary
or imaginative moment, generates its only semblance of
aggressive tension in the image of young women reducing
men to sex objects whom they then despise for actually
wanting to have sex. It's enough to make Friday the 13th
look friendly.

I'M
WITH LUCY - 2002
We
all know people like Lucy (Monica Potter). She’s cute
and quirky, and looking for the one person she’ll
marry, and spend the rest of her life with. “I’m
With Lucy” is a fairly simple idea for a movie, as
it follows Lucy, and her conquest to find the perfect man
through trial-and-error dating.
Each guy Lucy dates is completely different, which leads
to the funny. For instance, Anthony LaPaglia is a has been
baseball player looking to get laid by hitting on Lucy constantly,
in a less-than-suave way. David Boreanaz, of “Angel”
and “Buffy” fame, plays Luke, a suave doctor
who ends up paying more attention to a friend’s daughter
than Lucy.
“I’m With Lucy” isn’t a particularly
funny movie. Monica Potter is seriously miscast as the lead
in this flick. Instead of bringing her own energy to the
role, it seems as if she’s trying to channel Julia
Roberts at times. Her parents in the movie are overly annoying,
saying extremely inappropriate things about her to her date.
Usually, it’s funny, but here, it’s completely
forced and lacks the creativity when it was done in “Flirting
With Disaster.”
At heart, “I’m With Lucy” tries to be
a romantic comedy. Unfortunately, it falls short as the
romance is almost nonexistent, as well as the comedy for
that matter. The concept is here, but the execution is less-than-stellar. |

CROW WICKED PRAYER - 2005
Set
in the American southwest, WICKED PRAYER tells the story of
ex-con and social outcast Jimmy Cuervo. Despised by most of
the local community, Jimmy plans to leave town once his probation
is up and take his true love, Lily "Ignites the Dawn",
with him. Those plans are altered when Luc Crash (David Boreanaz)
and Lola Byrne, leaders of a local satanic gang known as the
"Four Horseman of the Apocalypse", murder Lily for
her blue eyes to consummate a ritual which will turn Luc into
the devil reincarnated.
Jimmy, murdered a long side Lily, returns from the afterlife
as an immortal vigilante to exact revenge upon the Four Horseman.
To be reunited with Lily, he must face the devil himself in
order to stop the evil plans of Luc and Lola. Saving the love
he and Lily shared also means Jimmy will also save the town
that has shunned him, an ironic twist of fate that he must
resolve to be reunited with Lily.
This
is the 4th film in the series of Crow films, "The Crow:
Wicked Prayer". Directed by Lance Mungia (Six String
Samurai), "Wicked Prayer" is in post-production
and stars Edward Furlong, David Boreanaz, Tara Reid, Dennis
Hopper, Macy Gray, and Danny Trejo. Script reviews and trailer
previews are touting this to be a film to watch for, as not
only does it promise to be a great film in its own right,
but also one of the best in the series. |

THESE
GIRLS - 2005
I'm
pleased to announce the theatrical release of These Girls
in Canada is the 10th March 2006
Lets hope the DVD comes out soon for us non-Canadian residents!
Based
on the humorously edgy play by Vivienne Laxdal, These Girls
is the story of three teenage girls who, in turn, seduce and
then attempt to share Keith, an older married man. It is a
tale of innocence, jealousy and friendship told as a provocative
coming-of-age story.
When
Carolyn and Lisa discover that their best friend Glory is
sleeping with Keith Clark (David Boreanaz), they both, in
their own ways, go about seducing him as well. When each discovers
that the other is involved with Keith, their friendship is
put to the test. However, rather than squabble over him and
run the risk of all losing out, they decide to make a pact
and share him. At first, Keith puts up resistance to the plan,
but soon finds out that he has very little say in the matter.
He takes it like a man and caves in.
Their
scheme works well for a time, but eventually all good things
must come to an end. On a fateful night, a desperate and sexually
exhausted Keith sets in motion his escape plan and everything
comes crashing down.
